Why does my platinum ring scratch?

Every metal in the world will scratch with normal wear and tear. The only way to avoid this entirely would be to leave your ring in its box—which, of course, isn’t realistic for a piece meant to be worn and enjoyed every day.

Even platinum, which is naturally denser and more durable than gold, will develop surface scratches and scuffs over time. This is a natural characteristic of precious metals and part of the ageing process of fine jewellery.

The diamond—the centrepiece of your ring—can and should be kept sparkling with regular gentle cleaning, for example using a soft toothbrush and mild soapy water (see our toothbrush cleaning guide). This will ensure the stone always retains its brilliance.

Any surface scratches on the metal can be professionally removed by a jeweller such as Alan Bick. If you have any concerns, you are welcome to bring your ring back to us and we will polish it free of charge.

However, it’s important to remember that every time a ring is polished, a very small layer of metal is removed to eliminate scratches. Over many years, excessive polishing can gradually reduce the thickness of the ring. For this reason, we recommend a professional service check and polish approximately every couple of years, rather than polishing after every minor mark.
